FCT, Abuja – Ahead of the 2027 election, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Tuesday, September 2, accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of fighting the opposition using thugs, infiltrators, and hired hooligans to break up political meetings in some states.
Atiku, in a statement he personally signed, obtained by Legit.ng, said security forces failed to act in the alleged incidents in in Kebbi, Kaduna, and Ogun states, “and even blamed the victims.”

Atiku chides Tinubu’s govt
Legit.ng recalls that violence marred the by-elections conducted in August in some states to fill vacant senatorial and house of representatives’ seats.
Last Saturday, August 30, chaos erupted at the official inauguration of a transition committee jointly set up by opposition parties in Kaduna state, as suspected political thugs stormed the event, attacking participants and vandalising property.
The committee brought together members of an APC faction opposed to the state leadership alongside the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Social Democratic Party (SDP, New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Labour Party (LP), and the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The launch, held in Kaduna, descended into violence when hoodlums armed with cutlasses, clubs, and stones disrupted the proceedings, eyewitnesses disclosed.
Several attendees were injured, and vehicles were destroyed.
On Monday, September 1, the convoy of Abubakar Malami, a former minister of justice and ex-attorney-general of the federation (AGF), came under attack by suspected political thugs in Birnin Kebbi.
The incident occurred shortly after Malami returned to the state on a condolence visit to some families in the Kebbi state capital.
About 10 vehicles in the convoy were damaged, while some supporters were said to have been injured during the attack.
Malami, leader of the ADC in Kebbi, described the attack as “politically motivated”.
Reacting to the attacks purportedly by supporters of the APC, Atiku asserted that the “silence” of the ruling party makes it complicit.
Atiku’s statement partly reads:
“Instead of fighting insecurity, the ruling APC is fighting the opposition using thugs, infiltrators, and hired hooligans to break up political meetings in Kaduna, Kebbi, and Ogun. In each case, security forces failed to act and even blamed the victims. The silence of the APC leadership is proof of complicity.
“Let it be clear: violence is a vicious circle that will eventually consume those who use it. Any politician who needs violence to win is desperate, unpopular, and dangerous to democracy.
“We remind the Nigeria Police: you are funded by taxpayers, not by the APC. Your duty is to remain neutral, fair, and constitutional. Anything less is betrayal of public trust.”

Atiku fumes over Rivers elections
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Atiku condemned the outcome of the Rivers state local government (LG) polls.
The APC won 20 chairmanship seats out of the 23 local government councils in the elections held on Saturday, August 30, 2025.
Reacting, Atiku alleged that the election was not credible.
