2027: Okonkwo Explains Why Peter Obi Promised to Do One Term If Elected President, “Northern Votes”

A member of the opposition coalition, Kenneth Okonkwo, has described the promise made by the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, to serve for one term if elected as President as a political strategy to curry favour with the North.

Okonkwo, who appeared as a guest on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday, September 5, explained that Obi knew that if he did not make the promise, he would lose votes from the northern region of the country.

Recall that Peter Obi reiterated his commitment to providing good governance within four years, dismissing the need for an extended tenure.

However, the presidency criticised Obi over his renewed pledge.

But speaking on Friday, Okonkwo said:

“So I brought the theory as a way for any opposition party to inspire Nigerians to know that each side will not lose when they make any choice, whether north or south.

“So, it was even Atiku Abubakar that first of all said he was going to do one term, then Peter Obi now keyed into it because he knows that if he, as a younger person, does not make that promise, he loses the entire North.”

“So it’s purely a political strategy to say,” he added.

According to Okonkwo, any party serious about defeating an incumbent must agree that its presidential candidate would serve for one term so that no side will feel cheated.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that Solomon Dalung, a former minister of youth and sports, opened up on his key discussions with Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 elections.

Dalung revealed Obi’s stance regarding the single-term (four-year) presidency amid the calls for his return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
