Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, has no intention of leaving the ruling party, according to his spokesperson, Edwin Olofu.
The clarification comes in response to mounting speculation that the former Kano State governor was preparing to defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), barely two months after his resignation from the APC leadership.

Olofu dismissed the rumours as unfounded, stating that Ganduje remained loyal to both the party and President Bola Tinubu.
“Ganduje is a committed member of the APC who is not just a loyal party man but also loyal to the President and his Renewed Hope Agenda. So, ignore those saying he is planning to leave the APC. It is just fake news,” he told Sunday PUNCH.
Ganduje’s Resignation and APC Leadership History
Ganduje stepped down as APC National Chairman on 27 June 2025, citing health reasons. His departure, described by many party members and political observers as abrupt, ended a tenure that began on 3 August 2023 during an emergency meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee. He became the sixth chairman of the APC in just over a decade.
His predecessors include Chief Bisi Akande, former governor of Osun State; Chief John Odigie-Oyegun of Edo State, who is now with the ADC; Senator Adams Oshiomhole; Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, who served in a caretaker capacity; and Senator Abdullahi Adamu, former governor of Nasarawa State.
Visit to APC Chairman Yilwatda Not Linked to Defection
Speculation intensified following Ganduje’s recent visit to the new APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, which some interpreted as a reconciliatory gesture towards President Tinubu. However, Olofu clarified that the meeting was both personal and symbolic.
“It was first a personal one and a condolence visit. I was also there with him. When you listen, you would have heard him even saying that he supports the new chairman because there is a bond between the predecessor and the successor,” Olofu explained.
He further emphasised Ganduje’s goodwill towards his successor, stating, “Ganduje is not someone who will not wish whoever succeeds him well. He doesn’t think like that. That is why you see some former governors and chairmen of local governments have problems like that. No, he doesn’t belong to that school of thought. He told Yilwatda that he is going to lend him support whenever he needs it, and the man himself was very happy.”
When asked whether Ganduje had met with President Tinubu following his resignation, Olofu noted that only the former chairman could confirm such details.
