The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued its daily weather outlook for Tuesday, 9 September 2025, warning of widespread thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across the country.
The forecast, released on 8 September, includes flood alerts for parts of Niger and Kogi States and urges residents to remain cautious.

Thunderstorms sweep across multiple states
NiMet reported that morning thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected in Taraba, Adamawa, Kebbi, Zamfara, Gombe, Bauchi, Kaduna, Sokoto, and Katsina States.
By afternoon and evening, the weather pattern is set to intensify, with thunderstorms and moderate rains anticipated in Borno, Sokoto, Kebbi, Bauchi, Kaduna, Adamawa, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, and Taraba States.
The agency advised that residents in these areas should prepare for wet conditions that may affect visibility and disrupt travel and outdoor activities.
Flood risk looms in Niger and Kogi
Light morning rains are forecast for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kwara, Benue, Niger, and Kogi States. However, NiMet expects thunderstorms with moderate rainfall later in the day across Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, and the FCT.
The agency highlighted a heightened risk of flooding in parts of Niger and Kogi States, urging communities in flood-prone zones to remain alert and take necessary precautions.
Cloudy skies and widespread rainfall
Southern states are likely to experience cloudy morning skies with chances of light rain in Ebonyi, Imo, Abia, Oyo, Ogun, Edo, Lagos, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.
By afternoon and evening, moderate rainfall is expected to spread across most parts of the region.
NiMet noted that while the rains may not be severe, residents should anticipate slippery roads and possible delays in outdoor plans.
Safety urged as thunderstorms approach
The weather agency has advised Nigerians to exercise caution during thunderstorms, warning that strong winds may accompany rainfall.
Such conditions could lead to reduced visibility, slippery surfaces, and disruptions to daily routines.

NiMet lists states predicted to experience thunderstorms

In its weather outlook issued on Thursday, September 5, NiMet cautioned that on Friday morning, thunderstorms with light rains are expected to hit parts of Taraba, Jigawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, and Katsina States.
The federal government agency also noted that thunderstorms with moderate rains are anticipated over Sokoto, Katsina, Kano, Zamfara, Kebbi, Kaduna, Taraba, Borno, and Adamawa States on Friday afternoon.
