Dangote Makes Promises to Workers, Announces New Petrol Price

• Dangote Refinery has again reiterated that it is not opposed to unionism and will protect workers’ rights
• It added that despite NUPENG accusation it is ready to allow its member to freely join or not join a union
• Dangote has also announced a new petrol price as it set to begin direct petrol supply from Monday

The management of Dangote Refinery has assured its workers of fair treatment and respect for their rights.

The assurance which was made in a statement released on Sunday, September 14 comes amid growing tension with the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) over union representation at the oil facility.

The company once again stressed that it was not opposed to unionism and acknowledged the right of employees to freely associate, in line with Nigeria’s labour laws and international labour standards.

However the management noted that the principle of voluntarism must guide industrial relations.

The statement reads:

“Dangote Refinery has reaffirmed that it is not opposed to unionism, stressing that it recognises the right of workers to unionise.

“The Group also respects the rights of all workers either to join or not to join a union, in line with the principles of voluntarism. While the company is obliged to protect the rights of workers who choose to join, it is equally obliged to safeguard the rights of those who, for any reason, decide not to do so.”

But the refinery’s management said its priority was ensuring stability in the workplace and avoiding disruptions that could threaten operations or the broader economy.

It added:

“Management further emphasised that it respects the rights of all employees to a safe, peaceful and secure environment, free from threats to their personal well-being and source of income.

“Dangote Refinery said it will continue to engage relevant stakeholders and assured workers, the government and Nigerians that it will not relent in promoting the economic health and well-being of its employees and the nation at large.

The company also appealed to NUPENG and other unions to respect the principles of voluntarism and peaceful engagement.

“The company also urged unions to respect these principles in order to foster a peaceful industrial relations ecosystem in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.”

The Dangote refinery was commissioned in 2023 and has played a key role in reducing Nigeria’s reliance on imported petroleum products.

The Dangote refinery is set to kick off direct supply of its petrol from Monday, September 15.

Dangote refinery slashes petrol price

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced a reduction in its gantry petrol price to ₦820 per litre.

The new rate, which takes effect on Monday, September 15, 2025, represents a ₦15 drop from the current price of ₦840 per litre.
