According to Daily Star, the incident took place as Digne attempted to defend a cross, only to be caught by Martinez’s boot square on the forehead.
Play was stopped immediately as medical staff sprinted onto the pitch to assess the damage.
TV cameras later revealed a large lump just above Digne’s eyebrow, drawing gasps from supporters watching at home.
Villa fans later joked about the incident as some flooded social media with reactions, with one comparing the swelling to a “tennis ball.”
Despite the gruesome appearance of the injury, the Frenchman was cleared to continue and went on to finish the match.
Martinez returns after failed Man United move
Martinez’s return to Villa’s starting XI came days after his proposed move to Manchester United collapsed on Transfer Deadline Day.
The Argentine goalkeeper had been heavily linked with a switch to Old Trafford, but talks broke down, leaving him available for selection at Goodison Park.
His involvement was crucial as he kept a clean sheet, denying Everton several chances and helping Villa secure their second point of the season.
However, the clash with Digne was the major talking point from an otherwise cagey encounter between two mid-table teams.
Aston Villa still searching for first win
The draw against Everton means Aston Villa remain without a win in their opening four league matches, having recorded two defeats and two draws so far, The Mirror reports.

Emery, who was upbeat before the game, admitted the team is still gelling after a busy transfer window.
Villa secured the late signings of Harvey Elliott, Jadon Sancho, and Victor Lindelof, and Emery insists the team will soon find its rhythm.
“The results are the consequences of how you are performing, collectively and individually,” he said. “We are trying to build a team as soon as possible with the new players.”
Attention now shifts to Tuesday night when Villa travel to Brentford for the Carabao Cup third-round clash.
A win could inject some much-needed confidence into the Villa squad still looking for its first big result of the season.
Aston Villa lose out on Chukwueze
In another development, Legit.ng reported that a move to Aston Villa was a viable option for Super Eagles forward Samuel Chukwueze, particularly given that his breakthrough into Villarreal’s first team came under the management of Unai Emery.
Villa were among the English teams interested in signing the Nigerian forward before he eventually sealed a deadline day move to Fulham from AC Milan.
