FCT, AbujaPresident Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially lifted the six-month state of emergency in Rivers state, declaring that governance must immediately return to normal.

Speaking in a statement on Wednesday, September 17, Tinubu said:

“It gives me great pleasure to declare that the emergency in Rivers State shall end with effect from midnight today.”

The statement shared by Bayo Onanuga via X, the President also confirmed that key political figures suspended during the emergency rule would now resume their constitutional roles.

1. Governor Siminalayi Fubara

Governor Siminalayi Fubara will return to office after being suspended for six months.

Tinubu indicated that the crisis between the Governor and the House of Assembly had immobilised governance and therefore his reinstatement was imperative.

2. Deputy Governor Ngozi Nma Odu

Deputy Governor Ngozi Nma Odu will also resume her position.

Tinubu stressed that restoring the executive leadership was essential to stabilising governance in Rivers State.

3. Speaker Martins Amaewhule

Martins Amaewhule, Speaker of Rivers state House of Assembly, is also among the reinstated.

His position will be critical in bringing a working relationship between the executive and the legislature.

4. Members of the State House of Assembly

All suspended members of the Rivers State House of Assembly will return to their duties.

Tinubu reminded them of the need for collaboration with the executive arm for peace and development.

Tinubu urges leaders to prioritise harmony

The President used the occasion to caution political leaders nationwide.

“It is only in an atmosphere of peace, order, and good government that we can deliver the dividends of democracy to our people,” Tinubu declared.

He further called on governors and assemblies across the country to learn from Rivers state’s crisis and avoid destructive conflicts.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that President Bola Tinubu had lifted the emergency rule in Rivers state, effectively marking the end of the leadership of the Sole Administrator, retired Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok Ete-Ibas.

Ibas was tapped by the president to lead the state when the feud between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike was descending into a violent chaos the federal government argued was beginning to threaten national security.
