Details have emerged surrounding a recent closed-door meeting between former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, sparking renewed political interest ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to TRIBUNE ONLINE, the two leaders reportedly discussed pressing national issues, including strategies to “rescue the country,” in what has been described as part of a broader series of consultations aimed at shaping the political landscape in the lead-up to the next electoral cycle.

Labour party consultations signal political momentum

Peter Obi, who disclosed the visit via his official X handle, confirmed he was joined by key party figures during the meeting. His delegation included Dr Yunusa Tanko, spokesperson for the Labour Party presidential campaign council; Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the party’s 2023 Lagos State governorship candidate; and Segun Adebanjo.

Dr Tanko, who also serves as the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, provided further insight into the nature of the engagement.

He described the meeting as a convergence of “like minds” committed to addressing the nation’s challenges.

“It was a meeting of like minds. Remember Mr. Peter Obi served under the leadership of Chief Obasanjo, so there was a need for the two of them to sit and discuss how to rescue the country,” Tanko said.

He added that the conversation also emphasised the importance of civic participation, particularly the need for Nigerians to exercise their voting rights.

No confirmation yet on 2027 presidential bid

When asked whether Obi had declared his intention to contest the presidency in 2027, Tanko clarified that no formal announcement had been made.

“That is a public declaration. When the time comes, everybody will be informed accordingly,” he stated.
