Nigerians are mourning the passing of former Nigerian internationals who have passed away in the last two days.
One of Super Eagles’ greatest goalkeepers, Peter Rufai died following a prolonged sickness in Lagos on July 3, which he failed to announce to his close friends aside from his family members.
Five days later, a former Golden Eaglets coach Hassan Abubakar, also died following a prolonged sickness in Zaria and was buried according to Islamic rites.

Shooting Stars assistant coach Akin Olowokere collapsed during a training session on Monday, August 11, and was immediately rushed to the hospital, but sadly passed away.

Former Super Eagles star is no more
A former Super Eagles star (previously called Green Eagles), Lookman Oshun, is dead.
According to Totori News, the former Shooting Stars legend passed away on Monday night due to a prolonged illness, and was buried on Tuesday morning, August 12, according to Islamic rites.
During his active days, the winger played for Stationary Stores and First Bank FC before delving into coaching, handling First Bank and Smart City.
Oshun was survived by his wife and four children, per Western Post.

Another former Nigerian international confirmed dead
Former Super Eagles invitee Akeem Ashiru passed away in Enugu State on August 12 after a prolonged illness.
Group Sports Editor of The Sun newspaper, Emmanuel Jemegah, via WhatsApp broadcast.
Jemegah said the former Calabar Rovers stars were invited to the national team camp before he got dropped. He said:
“Another Super Eagles invitee, Akeem Ashiru dies. He played for Vasco Da Gama and Udorji United of Enugu as well as Calabar Rovers of Calabar
“I’m not sure he played for Rangers, but I know he was in Super Eagles camp in Papendal before the Nations Cup, before he was dropped.”
Coal City Football legend mourns Ashiru
Enugu State Football legends have paid tributes to the former Rangers International star.
They claimed Akeem Ashiru cracked jobs with his teammates at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in early July 2025. The statement read:
“You were full of life and brimming with optimism and confidence when we were cracking jokes opposite Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium just early last month of july 2025!
“You have never been known or identified with a history of any serious ailments or sickness since you first arrived in Enugu over 35 years ago as a fresh signing from Makwada Fc Numan to Nitel Vasco Da Gama, then under the tutelage of Coach Dominic Nwobodo.”

Peter Rufai is dead
Legit.ng earlier reported that Super Eagles legend Peter Rufai passed away at the age of 61 after a prolonged illness on July 3.
The news came as a rude shock to the football community and Nigerians who are huge fans of the goalkeeper.
