Atalanta reneged on their agreement to let him leave this summer after denying him a move last summer, forcing Lookman to publish a statement on social media.
The winger confirmed that he had put in a transfer request and appealed to the fans to understand the situation and not view their relationship otherwise.
Atalanta CEO Luca Percassi responded to Lookman, admitting that even though there was an agreement, the club was not open to selling him to an Italian club.
The Super Eagles proceeded on strike in a bid to force a move away, but the Bergamo-based club refused to budge and stood their ground in the deal.
La Dea also rejected a late loan offer from Bayern Munich, who rushed into the market when Nicolas Jackson’s deal from Chelsea was threatened by Liam Delap’s long-term injury.
The player returned to the club’s facilities in Zingonia days after the European transfer window closed, but was on an individual training routine.
He flew to Nigeria for the international break, playing a combined 165 minutes as the Super Eagles beat Rwanda 1-0 and drew 1-1 against South Africa.
The former RB Leipzig was left out of the match-day squad for Atalanta against Lecce and Paris Saint-Germain on his return after the international break.

Head coach Ivan Juric confirmed the case over the winger’s action during the break is closed, and focus has turned to getting him physically up to speed.
“Lookman? That’s a closed issue. The group is solid. He spoke with me and the team on Monday. He has a great winning mentality: now we need to get him back physically fit,” he said as quoted by Tutto Sport.
Lookman is likely to continue his cameo appearances off the bench with huge games against Juventus in Serie A and Club Brugge in the Champions League next.
