Ghanaian boxer Ernest Akushey was regarded as one of the brightest boxing stars in the country.

Akushey dominated the super middleweight and cruiserweight divisions, boasting of an unbeaten record in the early stages of his career and winning the hearts of the fans.

The 32-year-old took up a fight against fast-rising boxer Jacob Dickson in the super middleweight division, which took place at the Bukom Boxing Arena on September 12.

Akushey, who derived his nickname from the legendary warrior in Indian movies, suffered a heartbreaking loss via Technical Knockout (TKO).

Akushey dies 11 days after boxing bout

Bahubali is known for his activities both on and off the boxing ring, with a large social media presence that often criticises fighters before their matches.

The 32-year-old had a winning streak of six bouts unbeaten before losing his seventh bout. In May, Akushey lost to Jonathan Tetteh before defeating Dickson in another bout in September.

In a viral video on X, Akushey failed to recover from the hands of Jaob Dickson as he inflicted pain on the popular boxer.

Exactly 11 days later, the boxing star passed away at around 2am with reports suggesting that it might be linked to internal injuries sustained during the bout.

How much did Bahubali earn?

Jacob Dickson, Ernest Akushey’s last opponent, revealed that both boxers were set to receive GHS20,000 (N2.3m) for the bout.

In a viral video on X, Dickson disclosed that the actual amount boxers earn is far less impressive than many of their fans presume.

Meanwhile, the National Sports Authority (NSA) has announced the immediate suspension of all boxing activities in Ghana following the tragic death of professional boxer Ernest Akushey, per BBC.

The NSA emphasised that the decision was made to prioritise the safety of athletes while investigations into the circumstances surrounding Bahubali’s death are conducted, per Citisports.

An interim board will be appointed to manage the sport’s administration and implement recommendations from the Amarkai Amarteifio Committee, formed after the death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Olanrewaju six months ago.

‘Big George’ had a remarkable boxing career, winning Olympic gold in 1968 and claiming the world heavyweight title on two occasions, 21 years apart.
