Breaking: Grief as Lagos Lawmaker Dies Two Weeks After Swearing In

Oluwakemi Rufai, the councillor representing Ward C1 in the Ibeju-Lekki local government area of Lagos State, has reportedly died, just two weeks after she was sworn in.

The late Rufai was reported to be the only female council member in the legislative chamber of the council. She was said to have died in the early hours of Wednesday, August 13, following a brief illness.

Lagos council chairs confirm Rufai’s death

According to Vanguard, her death was confirmed by the chairman of the Ibeju-Lekki LGA, Sesan Olowa, and his counterpart in the Lekki Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Rasaki Kasali, in a separate statement. They described her death as a rude shock to the community and the council.

Also, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos has mourned the demise of the Lekki lawmaker, describing Rufai’s passing as a deep sadness.

Seye Oladejo, the spokesperson of the party in Lagos, said that Rufai was one of the rising stars within the party. He said she was a committed grassroots mobiliser and gender inclusion. APC added that Rufai’s short time in office is a reflection of her dedication to community development and loyalty to the ideals of the party.

Oladejo then extended his condolences to the family of the late lawmaker, the Ibeju-Lekki community and her constituents. The APC chieftain added that “her legacy of service, courage, and vision will not be forgotten.”

When did the Lagos LG election hold

The Lagos State local government election was held on Saturday, July 12. It was a race between 139 candidates in no less than 10 political parties for 57 chairmanship positions across the state. Also, 14 political parties fielded 842 candidates for the 376 councillorship positions in the legislative seats across the state.

Sanwo-Olu announces palliative in Lagos

Legit.ng earlier reported that Lagos state governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has rolled out plans for the state to tackle the growing hardship in the state.

The state planned to share daily food in some identified Mama Puts and restaurants across the state.

According to Sanwo-Olu, delivery would be free in all hospitals, while there is a 25 per cent cut on public transport in the state, including buses, trains and ferries.
