Washington DC, United State – President Donald Trump has confirmed the arrest of a suspect accused of assassinating conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Speaking on Fox & Friends on Friday, 12 September, Trump said:

“I think with a high degree of certainty we have him in custody,” Trump revealed.

He told the programme that he had been informed of the arrest just before going on air.

“I heard that the suspect was in custody five minutes before I walked in,” Trump explained.

Trump added that local authorities had “done a great job, everybody worked together saying: “it all worked out.”

The President further claimed, citing reports he received, that “someone very close” to the suspect had turned him in.

US: Kirk killed while addressing university audience

Kirk, 31, was fatally shot on Wednesday, 10 September, while addressing a crowd at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.

Footage from the event appeared to show the right-wing commentator being struck as he spoke from under a white pop-up tent.

Just moments before the shooting, Kirk had shared images and video from the gathering on X.

The event was organised by Turning Point USA, the nonprofit he founded to promote conservative politics on college campuses.

Authorities said the gunman fired from a building around 200 feet away. Two persons of interest were detained shortly afterwards but later released.

At a press briefing, Utah Governor Spencer Cox described the killing as a “political assassination.”

Prior to the suspect’s arrest, FBI Special Agent in Charge Robert Bohls disclosed that investigators had recovered a high-powered, bolt-action rifle believed to have been used in the attack.

He added that a forearm imprint, palm print and footwear impressions were found on the roof of the building from which shots were fired. Investigators were also analysing images of the shooter using advanced technology.

Bohls stressed that Kirk’s killing appeared to be a targeted attack, and reassured the public that there was “no active threat” to the Orem community.
