FBI Director Kash Patel stated on Monday that Robinson’s alleged actions were politically motivated and premeditated.

Speaking on “Fox & Friends”, Patel said, “His family has collectively told investigators that he subscribed to left-wing ideology, and even more so in these last couple of years, and he had a text message exchange — he, the suspect, with another individual — in which he claimed that he had an opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and he was going to do it because of his hatred for what Charlie stood for.”

DNA sequencing ties robinson to crime scene

Patel revealed that DNA matching Robinson was discovered on a towel allegedly wrapped around a firearm found discarded in a wooded area near the university.

Additional DNA was recovered from a screwdriver located on a rooftop. “I can report today that the DNA hits from the towel that was wrapped around the firearm and the DNA on the screwdriver are positively processed for the suspect in custody,” Patel said.

The firearm itself, a Mauser bolt-action rifle, is currently undergoing analysis by experts at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Maryland. Patel clarified that only the towel has been processed so far.

The FBI also reported that the rifle was found near bullet casings bearing inscribed messages, including one that read, “Hey fascist! Catch!”

FBI director defends handling of investigation

Patel addressed criticism over his handling of the investigation, particularly regarding the announcement that a “subject” was in custody shortly before being released without charge.

He defended the decision, stating, “The job of the FBI is not just to manhunt the actual suspect who did the killing, or suspects, but it’s also to eliminate targets and eliminate subjects who are not involved in the process, and that’s what we were doing.”

He acknowledged that his wording may have been imperfect but stood by the decision to inform the public. “Could I have worded it a little better in the heat of the moment? Sure. But do I regret putting it out? Absolutely not.”

Local law enforcement and investigation challenges

Despite speculation about tensions between federal and local authorities, Patel praised the cooperation of state and local police, describing them as “fantastic.”

However, he admitted to frustration over delays in the release of investigative photos. “The photos were produced, they just weren’t produced in a timely fashion that I felt was appropriate for an investigation of this magnitude. So I came in and I accelerated that process,” he said.

Family members and neighbours described Robinson as a “squeaky clean” and “considerate” young man from suburban Utah who had only recently developed an interest in politics. The revelation of his alleged involvement in the shooting has shocked the local community.
