Enzo Fernandez gave the Blues a deserved lead in the first half, but a red card for Trevoh Chalobah for a professional last-man foul, the second in two games, crumbled the team.
Chelsea’s usual nemesis, Danny Welbeck, scored twice, including a 100th-minute goal on the either of Maxim De Cuyper to condemn the Blues to a loss at home.
The London club sits eighth on the Premier League table with eight points from six matches, with Benfica in the Champions League and Liverpool coming up next.
The result escalated tension in the Chelsea fanbase, with many already calling for the manager to be relieved of his duties to salvage their season.
Chelsea set target for Enzo Maresca
According to The Telegraph, the Chelsea hierarchy, including co-owner Behdad Eghbali, sporting directors Lawrence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, and recruitment chiefs Joe Shields and Sam Jewell, all went to the dressing room.
The countenance with which they headed for the locker room suggests there could be trouble, but Maresca downplayed that there was anything serious.
“They have been inside the changing room, like always, we have an office inside the changing room, where after every game, we sit and we talk about the game,” Maresca said.
“But they did not say anything to the players. It was nothing completely different compared to the rest of the games.”
BBC Sport reported that the club’s board set a target of qualifying for the Champions League this season, despite the standard set by last season’s success.
The intention was to review performances at the end of the season; however, with a poor run of results, pressure is building, and there could be actions if things don’t change.

This is said to have offended the club’s bosses, who do not want the manager making statements that upset the work they are doing behind the scenes.
