FG Issues Flood Alert to 11 States Predicted to Experience Heavy Rainfall, Mentions the Days

• 11 states in Nigeria have been predicted to be hit by heavy rainfall that may lead to flooding between Sunday, September 14 and Thursday, September 18
• The federal government warned that Adamawa, Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba, Delta and Niger states and five other states with their locations, will be affected
• The Federal Ministry of Environment, confirmed this in a statement issued on Sunday and shared further details

The federal government has warned that 11 states may experience heavy rainfall that may lead to flooding between Sunday, September 14 and Thursday, September 18.

According to a notice issued by the Federal Ministry of Environment’s National Flood Early Warning Centre, the affected states and locations are;

1. Adamawa State (Ganye, Natubi);
2. Benue State (Abinsi, Agyo, Gogo, Ito, Makurdi, Udoma, Ukpiam);
3. Nasarawa State (Agima, Rukubi, Odogbo);
4. Taraba State (Beli, Serti, Donga);
5. Delta State (Umugboma, Umukwata, Abraka, Aboh, Okpo-Krika);
6. Niger State (Rijau).
7. Kebbi State (Ribah);
8. Kano State (Gwarzo, Karaye);
9. Katsina State (Jibia);
10. Sokoto State (Makira); and
11. Zamfara State (Kaura Namoda, Shinkafi, Maradun, Gusau, Anka, Bungudu).

Rising water levels poses additional risks – FG warns

As reported by Daily Trust, the notice said rising water levels in the River Gongola, River Benue, and River Niger pose additional risks, warning that communities situated on the floodplains are especially vulnerable.

“Also, due to a rise in the water level of River Gongola, River Benue, and River Niger, the communities on the flood plains of River Gongola up to Numan, and also communities on the flood plains of River Benue and River Niger up to Lokoja are advised to evacuate immediately.

“Relevant stakeholders should kindly take note,” the alert added.

The ministry also urged state governments and other agencies to provide prompt feedback and act quickly to mitigate the impact.

NiMet predicts thunderstorms, lists states

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) released the weather outlook for Friday, September 5, 2025.

In its weather outlook issued on Thursday, September 5, NiMet cautioned that on Friday morning, thunderstorms with light rains are expected to hit parts of Taraba, Jigawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, and Katsina states.

The federal government agency also noted that thunderstorms with moderate rains are anticipated over Sokoto, Katsina, Kano, Zamfara, Kebbi, Kaduna, Taraba, Borno, and Adamawa States on Friday afternoon.

Similarly, Legit.ng reported that seven states and 25 locations across Nigeria have been predicted to experience heavy rainfall for two days, which could lead to flooding.

The Federal Ministry of Environment revealed this in its latest flood alert issued on Saturday, August 23.

According to the outlook, Benue, Borno, and Gombe are some of the states and its communities expected to be affected.
