Why is Spain pulling out?
The Spanish government are withdrawing from the 2026 World Cup in protest if Israel qualifies for the Mundial, which will be held in the United States of America, Canada and Mexico.
According to Sport Bible, the European giants’ Prime Minister Pedro Sachez called on the various sports bodies, including FIFA to exclude them from international competition over their actions in Gaza.
Sanchez said FIFA should melt down the actions it took against Russia, which invaded Ukraine in 2022, on Israel.
He claimed that Israel is being favored by the sports world and warned that it will get away with its actions if not held accountable. Sanchez said:
“Israel cannot continue to use any international platform to whitewash its image.”
Israel currently have nine points, having played five matches in the UEFA Group I. They are behind group leaders with six points and stand a chance of securing a play-off depending on the result from other groups.

According to Gazeta Express, the government spokeswoman explained that sports is meant to be a unifying tool in mending fences but the actions of Israel should not be tolerated.
She notified FIFA to exclude Israel due to the worsening situation in Gaza. She wrote:
“Sport is not and cannot be an island independent of what happens in the real world, especially when the real world shows us that human rights are being destroyed.”
What did Israel do?
A United Nations (UN) commission of inquiry said that there are reasonable grounds to believe Israel has committed four out of the five acts that constitute genocide under international law in Gaza.
According to BBC, the ongoing conflict began after Hamas launched an attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, killing approximately 1,200 people and taking 251 others hostage.
Israel’s military offensive has resulted in the deaths of at least 64,964 Palestinians.
