Five ugly interior design mistakes Brits are making revealed by an interior designer – from your lighting to kitchen

An interior expert has shared the five ugliest design mistakes Brits are making in their homes.

Nicolas Fairford, who is from the Midlands but is now living in Scotland, didn’t hold back when it came to naming and shaming the “vibe-killers” that many of us are guilty of having in our households.

From microwaves to laundry racks, the YouTuber, who aspires to help create a calming space in the home, accused such household additions of jarring the “flow and beauty” of a well-designed space.

First up, Nicolas took to TikTok (@nicolasfairford) to discuss a very popular offender – the TV.

The 35-year-old, who moved out of his parents house when he was 18, explained that in that time, he has never owned a TV because they “dominate the room.”

He says: “Everybody places their furniture to face that thing.

“It is just an ugly black box and I don’t want it in my house to disturb the flow and the beauty.”

Instead, he explains that if he fancies watching something, he’ll simply just put his laptop on instead.

Nicolas then moves his attention to the kitchen and slams a common appliance that many of us use daily – the microwave.

He brands it a “huge metal box” which simply “takes up too much space.”

Next up, the YouTuber explains how having laundry drying all around the house “kills the vibe” – even in the most beautiful of homes.

Instead, he reveals how he uses the spare room in his house to dry his washing – adding that he always ensures the door is firmly closed so that he never has to look at it.

Nicolas adds that he forks out £12 a week to have his bed sheets laundered so that he doesn’t have to worry about the sight of them being hung to dry all over the house.

Another popular household item on Nicolas’ hitlist is overhead lighting.

“You can have a beautiful interior, but if you’ve got the overhead lighting, it just kills the vibe,” he notes.

“It makes everybody look a lot less attractive.”

Instead, Nicolas advises placing lamps all around the room so that there’s little pools of light that’ll “cast a nice glow.”

Interior Design expert advice

And last but not least, the interior designer targets homeowners who have decorative candles in every room but fail to light them.

He says: “Five is unused candles, and by this, I mean when you find those taper pillar candles in glass vases or globes and they’re unlit, gathering dust.”

The interior designer claims they look “terrible” and recommends lighting them so they look used – even if it’s just for an hour.

The post racked up a whopping 144k views, with very mixed opinions from social media users.

Some were in agreement, with one writing: “Completely agree, however, I do own a TV!

“My no. 1 pet peeve is a washing line in the garden. They look hideous.”

Another posted: “Agree with all this. I’d add: gloss paint, huge speakers, wire/plastic coat hangers, prosecco, rude people.”

However, others pointed out that Nicolas’ five big no no’s just weren’t practical – especially for families with kids.

“Put three kids in your house – you’ll buy a TV, stop ironing bed sheets and you WILL have laundry in places you really don’t want it,” one person commented.

Another chimed in: “Tell me you don’t have kids without telling me you don’t have kids.”
