I revamped my modern classic motor for under £300 – including a part that cost less than a McDonald’s Big Mac meal

A PETROLHEAD has transformed his bland Volkswagen Golf for under £300 – with one part costing less than a McDonald’s meal.

Michael Terry, 25, set out to challenge himself with a budget-friendly car transformation using affordable products from online retailer Temu.

In a video posted to YouTube from his channel The Other Stuff, Michael shares how he picked up a fifth-gen VW Golf – now considered a modern classic – for just £350 after it had been abandoned off-road for over a year.

But despite its tired condition, he saw potential in the car and transformed it into a stylish, modernised set of wheels for under £300 using budget parts.

The project began as a fun experiment after Michael ordered a £6.90 McDonald’s meal and wondered if he could find car parts cheaper than his lunch.

To his surprise, he was quickly able to find quality bits for his motor on Temu at rock-bottom prices.

Among his purchases was an air filter induction kit for just £5.53 – a fraction of the typical £240 price tag.

“It sounds heavenly,” Michael said, impressed by its performance.

He also modernised his car’s interior by swapping out the factory stereo for a sleek Apple CarPlay-compatible head unit, which cost only £66 instead of the usual £200.

“For under £70, the whole dashboard looks different now. It’s got CarPlay, Bluetooth, everything I need. And it actually feels like it belongs in the car,” he said.

Michael further enhanced the car’s exterior with a £27 spoiler, wing mirror LEDs for £5.88, a shark fin antenna for £3.64 and Volkswagen door lock covers for a measly £3.58.

“It’s these little touches that give the car personality again,” Michael added.

To make the installations easier, he picked up a socket wrench set for £3.78 and tackled the modifications himself.

“Doing it all myself was part of the fun. It’s satisfying seeing the transformation come together knowing it didn’t cost a fortune,” he said.

By the end of the project, Michael had created a car he was proud to drive – and all without breaking the bank.

“This feels amazing to me,” he said.

“I spent so little on modifying a car that would have cost me twice as much anywhere else,” he said.

Temu, which has been growing in popularity among car modders, is praised for its game-changing, quality products at affordable prices.

According to a recent IPSOS survey, over 80% of Temu users in the UK report strong value and significant savings, thanks to the platform’s streamlined supply chains and reduced costs.

“I’m over the moon,” Michael said.

“I’ve turned a £350 Golf into something I’m genuinely proud to drive. And I did buy some products for less than a McDonald’s meal. That’s the power of knowing where to shop.”
