As well as his extraordinary success between the flags, he also rode 90 winners under Rules, his biggest success coming in a Listed race for trainer Mick Winters in 2009.

He played a big part in the development of the legendary Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Denman, helping break the horse in and teaching him to jumps before he was sold to race for Paul Nicholls.

Father of three O’Connor also enjoyed success as a jumps trainer, saddling 27 point-to-point winners and 21 under Rules in Ireland.

According to the Irish Field, O’Connor died of a suspected heart attack at his Co Cork stables.

Horse Racing Ireland said: “We are deeply saddened to hear that Mikey O’Connor has passed away. We send our condolences to his family, friends and racing colleagues.

“Mikey was one of Ireland’s leading point-to-point riders riding over 400 winners and won three Southern titles. May he rest in peace.”

O’Connor suffered several significant injuries during his career, and he had to be airlifted to hospital after a fall in a race at Boulta point-to-point track in 2014.

O’Connor, who had four point winners last season, is survived by his wife Mags, daughters Sophie and Rachel, son Dylan, mother Noreen and twin sister Elaine.
