Major car brand recalls FIVE models in UK over defect that increases risk of crash

RENAULT has reportedly recalled five of its models over a dangerous defect related to the electronic parking brake system.

The defect reportedly increases the risk of the vehicle rolling unexpectedly, which could lead to accidents.

According to Auto Express, the affected models include the Renault Austral, Captur, Megane E-Tech, Scenic E-Tech and Rafale – all manufactured between April 2024 and January 2025.

The issue affects vehicles globally, although only 100 cars in the UK are thought to be impacted along with six Dacia Dusters.

The problem lies in an incorrectly angled position sensor within the parking brake actuator, which can prevent the parking brake from engaging properly under certain conditions, such as when the engine is off, the driver’s seatbelt is released or the driver’s door is opened.

Despite the increased risk of the vehicle rolling unexpectedly, the Assisted Parking Brake (APB) system remains functional, allowing the car to be immobilized.

Renault UK has yet to release an official statement, but affected owners will be notified with a recall code.

The French brand is actively contacting owners and while no immediate action is required, concerned owners can reach out to their dealer for more information.

Despite this issue, Renault is renowned for performing extremely well in safety tests, with most earning top five-star Euro NCAP ratings.

Renault has indeed enjoyed a stellar period, which has been driven by strong growth in electric and hybrid sales, a focus on high-margin products and a successful product offensive.

New, re-imagined models like the Scenic and Renault 5 have led to increased market share in Europe and globally, as well as resounding reviews.

The Renault 5, for example, was dubbed “the coolest car for not a lot of money” by Sun Motors supremo Rob Gill earlier in the year, while its sporty brother, the Alpine A290, won the ‘Best Fun EV’ award at the Autocar Awards 2025.

Renault also revealed the reinvented Clio, which combines a bold new design with cutting-edge features.

The Clio, a staple of UK roads for the past 35 years, is gearing up for its sixth generation after making its debut at the 2025 Munich Motor Show last week and, while pricing has yet to be confirmed, it’s believed it won’t differ too greatly to its current price.

Elsewhere, SEAT, very much a forgotten car brand that’s been sidelined in recent years, is set to make a comeback with refreshed versions of two of its iconic models.

The Spanish car brand owned by the Volkswagen Group, has been underpinned by Cupra in recent years, but the SEAT Arona, their small SUV, and the much-loved Ibiza hatchback, will each get facelifts in autumn 2025.

Their report claims these updates will include visual changes, new colours and possibly even mild hybrid drivetrains – although electrification hasn’t been confirmed.

SEAT hasn’t updated its cars since the Arona and Ibiza each got facelifts back in 2021.

During this period, Cupra has emerged as Volkswagen’s preferred Spanish marque, delivering a more premium experience.

Indeed, its success has been so significant that it has now surpassed SEAT in sales, with models like the Formentor and Tavascan becoming big sellers, while the Born is seen as a main player in the EV hatchback segment – along with the upcoming Raval.
