Major motorway shut in both directions after crash as emergency services rush to scene

A CRASH has shut down a major motorway in both directions as drivers are warned of traffic chaos.

Police were called to reports of a collision on the M66 near Bury at around 10.30pm on Sunday evening.

Paramedics and fire crews have blocked traffic in both directions southbound from J3 for Pilsworth to J4 for the M60 and Simister Island.

It is not known yet when the roads will re-open.

A National Highways spokesperson said: “The M66 is closed southbound between J3 and M60/M62 J18 Simister Island. The northbound carriageway is closed within M60/M62 J18

“We are assisting Greater Manchester Police in responding to a collision.”

An update on Intrix read: “All traffic being temporarily held and stationary traffic due to accident on M66 in both directions from J3 Pilsworth Road (Hollins) to J4 M60 J18 (Simister Island).”
