With a slight increase in output from 1.505 million barrels per day in June, Nigeria solidified its position as Africa’s top oil producer, surpassing Algeria’s 937,000 barrels per day during the same period.

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) declared last week that the country’s July oil production surpassed 1.8 million barrels per day (bpd).

According to Gbenga Komolafe, the NUPRC’s Commission Chief Executive, the Commission is working on the Project 1 MMBOPD Incremental project, and thanks to the multi-stakeholder collaborative approach, some progress has been made.

He said,

“We are pleased to report that we achieved a peak production of 1.8 MMBOPD last month, with an average production rate of 1.78 MMBOPD.

“As part of our commitment toward sustainable production, the Commission is optimising the Maximum Efficient Rate (MER) framework, addressing produced water management, and aligning operational shutdowns and turnaround maintenance schedules to ensure minimal production disruptions.

According to an analysis of OPEC secondary sources, “Total DoC crude oil production averaged 41.94 million bpd in July 2025, up by 335,000 bpd month-on-month.”

Unless OPEC and its allies increase output from present levels, the research showed that global oil inventories could drop by nearly 1.2 million barrels per day next year.
