Simon Amstell, 45, told how he had quietly got hitched to economist Daniel Chandler at a registry office in Camden, having first got together in 2012.

Letting slip the news, he told the crowd: “At the beginning of this year, we got ourselves a civil partnership.

“It started just as a thing for practical reasons, then it became very meaningful, something where we were in a room with like 30 people and a violinist. And it was so emotional.

“It was a very healing thing for me.”

But Simon also wrote their vows and said they avoided having wedding rings in favour of a quirkier symbol of their bond.

He explained: “I wanted to hold on to a hint of queerness during this fairly conventional thing that we were doing. So rather than getting rings for our fingers, we went for earrings.”

And on the significance of the ceremony, he explained: “I thought, ‘Oh my God, my life has gone OK, actually’. I was like, ‘Oh wow. I’m sort of married. This a great guy, I’m not alone’.

“You feel very grateful. I feel a lot of gratitude now.”

Simon, who in recent years has become a writer and director, described how their romance is more unconventional to others though, as they still see other people.

Describing their relationship as “semi open,” he said: “We’ve been together for 13 years, almost 14 now.

“It’s like the best place ever, but it’s semi open, so that means that I’m open to potential rejection by strangers. And so that’s difficult.”
