One-cap former England star, 40, comes out of retirement to become player-coach of eighth-tier club

FORMER England international David Nugent has been named player coach at eighth-tier club Anstey Nomads.

Nugent, 40, initially rolled credits on his playing career in 2021 following a loan stint at Tranmere Rovers from Preston North End.

However, the striker decided to come out of retirement for non-league football and will start his new job with the Nomads on Saturday for the home game against Loughborough Students at Davidsons Homes Park.

Anstey Nomads announced: “David Nugent joins Anstey Nomads!

“The former Leicester City and England international joins as a player-coach and is available for Saturdays fixture vs Loughborough Students!

“Welcome Nugent.”

Fans were absolutely elated upon hearing the news as they stormed social media in excitement.

One fan tweeted: “Nuuuuuuuge!”

Another commented: “Haha, that’s nuts. What a signing.”

A third wrote: “You love to see it.”

This fan said: “Finally some good news.”

And that one posted: “Get in!”

Nugent went through quite a nomadic career as he also played for the likes of Bury, Portsmouth, Burnley, Middlesbrough, Derby County and of course Leicester.

The centre-forward spent four years with the Foxes where he amassed 59 goals and 28 assists in 180 appearances until his departure in 2015.

The player-coach also competed for England once in 2007 during a Euro 2008 qualifier in Andorra where he scored.
