Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto state has awarded the overall best-graduating student of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Sherif Abdullahi, a fully funded trip to Saudi Arabia for the 2026 Hajj exercise.

Aliyu announced this on Saturday, September 6, during the institution’s 42nd convocation ceremony, held at its main campus.
As reported by The Punch, the governor, an alumnus of UDUS, said the gesture was in recognition of Abdullahi’s academic excellence.
The graduate of Microbiology finished with a 4.92 Cumulative Grade Point Average, which the governor described as “one of the highest.”
“This university has profoundly impacted lives both within Nigeria and beyond Africa.
“Its contributions to national and international development cannot be overestimated, and today’s graduates should be proud to be part of that legacy,” Governor Aliyu said.

Sokoto governor hails Tinubu’s efforts in education
Speaking further, the governor also highlighted his administration’s investments in education, including settling N1.845 billion in accumulated tuition fees for Sokoto medical students at home and abroad, appointing four UDUS professors to head key education sectors in the state, and renovating primary, secondary, and tertiary schools.
“The Tinubu administration’s commitment to revitalising public universities has already begun to yield positive results.
“From improved funding frameworks to policy reforms aimed at enhancing academic quality and institutional autonomy, this dispensation is laying a stronger foundation for sustainable growth in higher education,” he added.
FG gifts teenager who won global English contest N200,000
In a related development, Legit.ng reported that Nafisa Abdullah, the Nigerian teenager from Yobe state, who emerged world best in English Language competition, were rewarded by Tinubu’s government.
The minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, on behalf of the federal government, gifted N200,000 to Nafisa at a ceremony in Abuja on Thursday, August 28.
Boy wins scholarship worth N24 million
Elsewhere, Legit.ng reported that a brilliant Nigerian boy was praised on social media due to his academic prowess. The boy emerged top in a mathematics competition and this won him many accolades.
According to education activist Alex Onyia, who shared the good news on X, the boy won a scholarship worth N24 million. He identified the boy as Agu Chijindu, noting that he won the Evergreen Schools Enugu Annual Mathematics Olympiad Competition.
