The health manager of the Arequipa region, Walther Oporto, said to local radio RPP that the bus hit a pickup truck and it went off a road on a curve, falling more than 650 feet to the banks of the Ocoña river.
The bus had departed from the city of Chala, a mining area also in southern Peru, and was heading to the city of Arequipa.

The driver, who survived the accident, was arrested on site.
An eight-month-old baby and two other children are among the 26 injuries, three of them being in serious condition.
Fire department spokesman Jack Paez told local outlet TV Peru that the rocky area makes the rescue efforts more difficult, adding that the accident “has brought grief to many families.”
Peru’s interior ministry disclosed that police officers were coordinating the rescue efforts with firefighters, with the focus being on “rescuing people, evacuating the injured and recovering bodies.”

Peruvian president kicked out of office
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Peruvian president Dina Boluarte was removed from office following a late-night congressional vote that united lawmakers from across the political divide.
The dramatic ouster came after months of mounting corruption allegations and investigations into her role in a violent crackdown on protesters in 2022 that left more than 60 people dead.
The motion, citing Boluarte’s “permanent moral incapacity,” was approved after she refused to attend the session or deliver a defence.
