Three cost-friendly ways to get your laundry finished without using a tumble drier

AS sunshine has given way to wetter, colder weather in many parts, it has become a little harder to dry clothes outdoors.

It is still an option, as tumble-driers are a drain on cash, but there are cheaper indoor options too.

Here’s some of what you need to know . . .

OUTSIDE: Even as temperatures drop, so long as there is no fog, mist or rain and it is about 7C, you can continue to hang items outside and they should dry off naturally.

Give items plenty of space hanging up and, if you are able to, move clothes throughout the day to follow the sun.

Another option is to set up a drying rack in a bedroom or room where you can keep the door shut.

Then, open a window to allow the moisture to escape from the room, and the breeze should help dry your clothes, without lowering the temperature in the rest of your home.

IN A SPIN: Run an extra spin cycle on the washing machine rather than put clothes in the tumble-drier.

Cotton shirts, jeans and the like are easier to iron when damp, plus the heat from the iron will naturally start to dry them out.

Then, simply hang up the clothes, including those that you have ironed, to let them slowly finish drying off.

HEAT UP: Avoid draping clothes over radiators in an attempt to get them dry more quickly.

The wet clothes will trap heat and will end up spending more to warm up your home.

Electrical heated drying racks can be a worthwhile investment for use during the colder, wetter winter months.

These racks cost just pennies per hour to run and are especially efficient if you also buy the associated cover to put over the top, as this will stop heat escaping.

Or just use a spare sheet to do the job.

The Argos three-tier heated airer is currently down from £105 to £78.75.

Or you can get single-layer flat ones for less than £40.
