Tributes As Former World Boxing Champion Ricky Hatton Dies Aged 46

A former light welterweight and welterweight boxing champion, Ricky Hatton, has passed away at the age of 46, according to multiple reports.

Hatton won 45 bouts and lost just three defeats over a 15-year career, but had been open about his personal struggles outside the sport.

During his incredible career between 1997 and 2012, the sensational boxer won titles in the light welterweight and welterweight divisions.

He had, in July 2025, announced his imminent return and was scheduled to take on Eisa Al Dah on December 2, which comes 13 years after his last professional bout.

According to a broadcast documentary about the boxer’s post-retirement life, he had personal troubles that affected his mental health.

Greater Manchester Police said via Sky Sports:

“Officers were called by a member of the public to attend Bowlacre Road, Hyde, Tameside, at 6.45am today where they found the body of a 46-year-old man.

“There are not currently believed to be any suspicious circumstances.”

Famous reporter Rob Harris described Hatton as “one of the great personalities of British boxing,” crediting him with “galvanising the sport”.

He said:

“As he would travel around the world, winning fights, he would bring that huge fan base with him… To have the career he had, with 45 victories and three defeats, was impressive.”

Hatton held several world titles at light-welterweight and one at the welterweight category during his 15-year career, per Daily Sports.

He recorded victories over the likes of Jose Luis Castillo and Kostya Tszyu before suffering brutal knockout losses to Floyd Mayweather Jr in 2007 and Manny Pacquiao in 2009.

The boxer last fought in November 2012 when he lost to Vyacheslav Senchenko of Ukraine.

Meanwhile, the sporting world has continued to pay tributes to the late boxer. Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn wrote:

“Everybody loved Ricky. May he rest in eternal peace. Our deepest condolences to Campbell, Matthew and all of the Hatton family.”

@piersmorgan added:

“RIP Ricky ‘The Hitman’ Hatton, 46. Found dead at his home in Manchester, police say no suspicious circumstances. What incredibly sad news.”

When Georgia O’Connor passed away

Legit.ng earlier reported that female professional English boxer Georgia O’Connor has sadly passed away at the age of 25 after an eight-month battle with a rare and incurable type of cancer.

O’Connor hailed from Durham, United Kingdom, and was a decorated boxer for Team GB at the amateur level, winning gold at the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2017.
