DISINFO ALERT: 2022 video recycled to suggest herdsmen invaded Ikorodu, say Lagos police

The police command in Lagos says the viral video showing the arrest of some persons with arms and ammunition in Ikorodu is old and misleading.

In a statement on Sunday, Abimbola Adebisi, Lagos police spokesperson, said the incident that occurred in the video happened over three years ago and does not reflect the current security situation in the Ikorodu area of the state.

On Saturday, @TheGrandmaBoy, an X user, published a video showing the discovery of live cartridges inside a white bus by some persons.

“BREAKING NEWS: Fulani Herdsmen arrested in Lagos Ikorodu with two vehicles loaded with bull£ts, G¥ns, and explosive devices,” the caption of the video reads.

Checks by CableCheck reveal that the video has been on the internet since September 2022.

According to media reports, the live cartridges were seen after residents of Unity Estate, Poro-Imope, Idiroko in Ikorodu uncovered a scrap yard where live cartridges were being stored in the area.

Two commercial vehicles loaded with large quantities of live cartridges were also recovered.

At the time of the incident, the police command in Lagos released a statement to announce the arrest of three suspects linked to the incidents.

VIDEO CAPABLE OF CREATING UNNECESSARY PANIC’

Adebisi said recycling the old video is “capable of creating unnecessary panic, fear, and apprehension among residents”.

The Lagos police spokesperson urged members of the public to disregard the video and refrain from sharing unverified information.

“The Lagos State Police Command wishes to state unequivocally that the video currently circulating on social media platforms depicting the arrest of some Fulani men allegedly found in possession of arms and ammunition in Ikorodu, Lagos State, is an old clip of an incident that occurred over three (3) years ago and does not reflect the current security situation in Ikorodu or any part of Lagos State,” the statement reads.

“The recirculation of such outdated content as a recent occurrence is misleading, capable of creating unnecessary panic, fear, and apprehension among residents.”
